About Shackelford County Texas
Shackelford County, in north-central West Texas, covers 914 square miles of rolling plains and mesquite savannah. With its county seat, Albany, the county was created in 1858 and named for Dr. Jack Shackelford, a physician who equipped soldiers for the Texas Revolution at his own expense. In 1874, 174 petitioners gathered under a pecan tree on the bank of the Clear Fork to organize Shackelford County. Notable attractions are the Historic Fort Griffin, established in 1867, and the Fort Griffin Fandangle, which occurs during the last two weekends of June and is a western musical production that began in 1938.
