The city of Eastland is in Eastland County, where it became a petroleum boomtown in the 1920s after oil was discovered. Eastland is most known for the legend of Old Rip, the horned toad. Legend says that Old Rip was placed in a cornerstone of the Eastland County Courthouse in 1897 as part of a time capsule. When the cornerstone was opened in 1928 as a result of the courthouse being torn down, a horned toad was found alive within the time capsule. It is believed that Old Rip was hibernating in the cornerstone for 31 years, and the story made national headlines.
