With their license in hand, your teen is ready to hop behind the wheel of a car and embark on a whole new part of their life. This can be a very exciting time for your family, but you may be feeling a little anxious and that is okay. We had our team here at Star Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Abilene put together some tips for your new driver that will help them feel safe on the road and help you feel more at ease when they leave the house. Read below with your teen to learn all the tips our team has to offer!
Safe Driving Tips for New Drivers:
Set Up the Vehicle for You: This is the first step you need to take when you hop in your car before you even switch it on. These steps are even more important if you are sharing a vehicle with siblings or your parents, and they need to be done each time you get into the car. When you sit in the driver’s seat, adjust it to make sure you can comfortably reach the steering wheel and the pedals. Then adjust all the mirrors, both inside and out, to make sure you can see the most road possible. Lastly, this isn’t necessarily adjusting, but you need to make sure that you are buckled up before you turn the car on too!
Silence the Cell Phone: We all know how distracting cell phones can be throughout the day, whether we are checking our notifications or utilizing one of our many apps to stay connected to those around us. In the car, this distraction can become incredibly dangerous and you don’t want to put yourself in a situation that can lead to an accident. We suggest that you keep your phone out of view in a bag or backup. If you won’t be carrying either of those, try the glove box or center console. Without seeing it, it is easier to ignore those notifications! If your vehicle has Bluetooth, you can connect your phone so you can make calls if necessary.
Slow Down: We were all teenagers once and we know it is exciting to hit the gas pedal and speed around town, but it can be incredibly dangerous, especially for new drivers who are not as experienced as others on the road. It is important that you always abide by the posted speed. You should also decelerate and accelerate slowly to ensure you can maintain control of your vehicle. If you hit the brakes too hard or slam on the gas, you run the risk of losing traction which can lead to you losing control of your vehicle.
