Power and Handling of the 2020 Jeep Gladiator

Fueling the Gladiator’s power and handling is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine. The Pentastar engine produces 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. For all your off-roading adventures the engine provides a broad torque band with a focus on low-end torque. While the low-range torque is essential for extreme off-roading it is also essential for demanding conditions like towing and hauling cargo. When equipped with the Pentastar engine the Gladiator comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission. If a manual transmission is not for you, don’t worry, the Gladiator offers an available eight-speed automatic transmission. Gladiator’s equipped with the automatic transmission comes with engine stop-start technology.

While a singular engine option is available at launch, a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 engine will be available as a late availability option. The EcoDiesel engine is rated at 260 horsepower and 442 lb-ft of torque. To handle the increased amount of torque, the EcoDiesel engine only comes with a specifically designed eight-speed automatic transmission. The EcoDiesel engine improves fuel economy and reduces greenhouse gas emissions thanks to low-friction pistons. Integrated combustion pressure sensors in the injector nozzle, glow plug, and piston bow provides an enhanced combustion system with optimal combustion. To improve fuel economy and expand the range of exhaust gas recirculation, the EcoDiesel's high-pressure system works with low pressure cooled exhaust gas recirculation.

The Gladiators optional eight-speed automatic transmission works to provide a responsive driving experience. Overall noise, vibration, and harshness levels are reduced thanks to a set of two overdrive ratios. Standard with the eight-speed automatic transmission is a Selec-Speed Control system. The system works to manage the vehicles speed in “4LO” while off-roading so you can focus solely on steering. The Selec-Speed Control system is easily activated by using a button on the dashboard and can be adjusted from 1-5 mph by using the AutoStick shift control.

The standard six-speed manual transmission has a ratio of 4.41 for improved fuel efficiency at faster speeds and quick acceleration. The cable operated system uses an optimized gear ratio for bolstered crawl ratio performance without shifter vibration. The shift pattern on the six-speed manual transmission features shift accuracy along with a comfortable shifting position.

For the best handling possible the Gladiator Sport and Overland models come equipped with Command-Trac 4x4 system while the Gladiator Rubicon uses a Rock-Trac 4x4 system. Both systems use full-time torque management for the best possible grip in low traction situations. The Command-Trac 4x4 system uses a two-speed transfer case with a 2.71:1 low-range gear ratio along with a heavy-duty third-generation Dana 44 front and rear axles with a 3.73 rear axle ratio. The Rock-Trac 4x4 system on the Rubicon model used a heavy-duty third-generation Dana 44 front and rear axles with a “4LO” ratio of 4:1. Tru-locking differential and a 4.10 front and rear axle ratio also come standard with the Rock-Trac system.

All versions of the 2020 Jeep Gladiator have an approach angle of 43.6 degrees, breakover angle of 20.3 degrees, departure angle of 26 degrees, ground clearance of 11.1 inches, and up to 30 inches of water fording.
