Jones County, TX, was initially settled in 1851 when Fort Phantom Hill was established as a line of military outposts to protect the Forty-niners. By 1858, the location was made a station on the Butterfield Overland Mail route to San Francisco. The county itself was established on February 1, 1858, and ranching activities began in the 1870s. Jones County was named after the last president of the Republic, Anson Jones, and was recreated in 1876. Farming activities were also prominent in the county, and in 1926, oil was discovered in a field southwest of Anson.
