About Jones County Texas
Jones County, TX, was initially settled in 1851 when Fort Phantom Hill was established as a line of military outposts to protect to the Forty-niners. By 1858, the location was made a station on the Butterfield Overland Mail route to San Francisco. The county itself was established February 1, 1858 and ranching activities began in the 1870s. Jones County was named for the last president of the Republic, Anson Jones, and recreated in 1876. Farming activities were also prominent in the county and, in 1926, oil was discovered in a field southwest of Anson. Today, recreational activities include hunting, Fort Phantom Hill, and lake activities.
