Fall Road Trip Tips

Written by Star Dodge Chrysler Jeep RAM of Abilene

There are several ways to travel across this great country, but road tripping is by far our favorite. While leaf-peeping is one of the most popular times of year to go road-tripping, there are some tips you can use to make sure that you avoid all the typical fall crowds. Don't let tons of people scare you away from the fall leaf-peeping scene, follow our road trip tips, and have a fun and safe fall season.

Find the best spots

While heading to places like New England might seem like a prime fall destination, there are often many crowds. Try places that won't be as populated but will still be bursting with all the bright oranges, yellows, and reds you expect for the season. Some of the more gorgeous locations that don't get tons of crowds are Arches National Park and Glacier Park in the western part of the United States. No matter where you go, be sure to plan out your trip before you go. Start by searching "best fall foliage trips" or "America's Best Fall Drives" and plan your trip out accordingly.

Time your road trip for the best color

It's almost impossible to predict when the best prime colors will be available when you're planning your road trip. One way to make your best guess would be to search the internet for when the peak time was the year before and plan around that. If you plan to make a last-minute getaway, check out the Weather Channel as they often publish maps of peak fall foliage times. You can also check the Farmers Almanac predictions for the best fall foliage dates. Knowing when to go on your trip also helps you avoid traffic and crowds. You can also drive on secondary roads instead of highways to get the most colors out of the season.

Choose the best fall accommodations

If you plan on going out on a long fall trip, you're going to want to get some cozy accommodations along the way. There are plenty of bed and breakfasts, inns, and unique hotels to stay at throughout this country, and there is something about waking up in a cozy bed and breakfast and sipping coffee during the fall. You can start your search by consulting the local visitor's bureau in whatever town you're in to see the available lodging choices. You can also go online to compare prices and read reviews of all the hotels in the area.

Find fun things to do on these road trips

Admiring the beautiful fall scenery on a road trip is a given, but there is much more to do when you're out in the wilderness. Get out of the car and stretch your legs by taking a hike so you can soak up all the fall colors. In addition to all the fall foliage, you are more likely to see some wildlife out on the trail. Another thing to do, depending on what part of the county you are in, is attending a fall festival. They are usually packed with food, games, and music, so they are fun for the whole family. You can check out where these are by doing a quick google search.

Bring the best fall gear

If you are going to spend a lot of time outside during your fall road trip, the weather is sure to be chilly, so make sure you pack a ton of layers. Don't forget to pack your rain slicker and gloves. Planning on going on a hike? Be sure to bring proper footwear and hiking poles. You might get a tad hungry in the wild, so be sure to pack a ton of snacks to munch on as you climb those hills.
