What is the Jeep Wrangler's Standard Engine?
The Jeep Wrangler was first equipped with the Pentastar 3.6L V6 engine in 2011 and has been standard equipment ever since. The V6 engine achieves the perfect balance of performance and efficiency with 285 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, along with eTorque mild-hybrid technology. The eTorque system places an electric motor in place of the traditional alternator to harness and repurpose electrical power that would go to waste otherwise. The eTorque system offers greater fuel efficiency by providing the Wrangler with a near-seamless Engine Stop/Start function. However, performance isn't sacrificed as the eTorque system allows for quicker torque delivery and smoother downshifting. The Pentastar engine comes paired with a six-speed manual transmission as standard equipment, while an eight-speed automatic transmission is optional. Command-Trac part-time 4x4 is the drivetrain that achieves the Wrangler's legendary off-road capability. Meanwhile, the Wrangler Rubicon comes with Rock-Trac part-time 4x4 for even greater all-terrain capability.
Turbo Inline-Four
The Wrangler's second gas-powered engine is a turbocharged 2.0L inline four-cylinder engine that comes as standard equipment for the Sahara trim and is optional for all other trim levels. While maximizing the Wrangler's fuel efficiency with eTorque, fewer cylinders, a smaller displacement, and a twin-scroll low-inertia turbocharger, the turbocharged engine provides higher torque. Despite its smaller size, the two-liter turbocharged engine provides impressive power output to the tune of 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. The wheels of Wrangler's equipped with the turbocharged engine are powered by Selec-Trac full-time automatic 4x4 and a TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission.
Jeep 4xe PHEV - Welcome to the Future of Jeep
The Jeep 4xe powertrain joined the Wrangler lineup in 2021. The name 4xe is a direct nod to the powertrain, standing for four-by-electric, meaning it is a four-wheel drive vehicle with electric power integrated. A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV), the Wrangler 4xe pairs the aforementioned turbocharged engine with a pair of electric motors and a rechargeable battery pack with 400 volts. One electric motor is within the transmission, taking the torque convertor's space, while the other is found at the front of the engine, replacing the traditional alternator. The Wrangler 4xe lineup includes the Sport S, Willys, Sahara, Rubicon, Rubicon X, and High Altitude trims. The 4xe powertrain delivers power to the wheels with an eight-speed automatic transmission through the Selec-Trac 4x4 system mentioned above. However, the Rubicon and Rubicon X trims come with full-time Rock-Trac 4x4.
What Powers the Wrangler Rubicon 392?
Introduced in 2022, the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 is the only Wrangler model equipped with a V8 engine. Powering the monstrous Rubicon 392 is a 6.4L HEMI V8, delivering a heart-pounding 470 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque to match. The '392' in the exclusive trim level's name nods at the engine's displacement of 392 cubic inches. With its V8 engine, the Wrangler Rubicon 392 reaches 60 MPH from a dead stop in just 4.5 seconds! The HEMI engine is mated to Jeep's TorqueFlite eight-speed automatic transmission. Unlike other automatic transmission Wrangler models, however, the Rubicon 392 comes with steering wheel paddle shifters for sequential gear control, giving you a more hands-on driving experience. Jeep's innovative HydroGuide air intake system with a functional hood scoop provides optimal engine cooling no matter the terrain. This is thanks to the three channels that remove as much as fifteen gallons of water from the engine air intake to keep it away from the engine. This means that if you encounter deep water on the trails and a bow break washes over the hood, engine airflow will continue. The Rubicon 392 also features a dual-mode active exhaust system to shake the earth with that one-of-a-kind HEMI rumble.
