Saba Stroll

You'll want an easy trail if you're just starting out your off-roading endeavor. Likely the easiest trail in the Abilene area is named the Saba Stroll, which cuts from Highway 16 to Highway 190. This leisurely ride takes you around the town of San Saba and over the San Saba River, offering beautiful Texas countryside views along the way. The road starts with a long straight stretch that leads to a large power station on one side and a graveyard on the other, creating a stark contrast between new and old. Along the trail's mid-section, you'll find it to be more windy and hilly as it approaches the Colorado River.

Breckenridge Byway

Another one of the easiest trails near Abilene is Breckenridge Byway. Spanning more than 50 miles, this dirt route takes drivers through the countryside of North Texas with a series of dirt roads. However, closer to Lake Daniel, you can enjoy some more technical terrain on small ledges and rocks. It is open year-round, but it is important to be cautious of any washed-out areas at the water crossings. In addition to off-roading, visitors also enjoy camping and fishing on Lake Daniel, making the area perfect for a weekend getaway. While any vehicle can enjoy Breckenridge Byway, high ground clearance is recommended.

Sandstorm

If you're a more experienced off-roader looking to challenge both your skills and the capability of your Jeep, Wolf's Caves Off-Road Park is the place to do it! Located about two hours south of Abilene, the park is spread out over 430 acres and features terrain for many different skill levels but is consistently challenging throughout. For example, the park's easiest trail is named Sandstone. Stretching 16 miles, riders can run Sandstone in either direction. Like much of the park, Sandstone features jagged rock formations with steep inclines. Owners of Wolf's Caves state that the trails are designed for modified off-road vehicles, meaning upgraded suspension, larger tires, lift kits, winches, and more.

Eamon's Wrecking Field

Eamon's Wrecking Field, also found in Wolf's Caves, has a Red trail rating, meaning it features some of the most challenging terrains and requires heavily modified vehicles and expert skill levels. This trail stretches just one mile but features near-vertical inclines, uneven rocks, narrow passes, and other technical features. In addition to Sandstone and Eamon's Wrecking Field, Wolf's Caves Off-Road Park features more than 60 trails for all skill levels.
